Greek and Turkish leaders to discuss Afghanistan

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are going to discuss the situation in Afghanistan later on Friday, officials say.

Mitsotakis and Erdogan are speaking on the phone at 16:30 GMT, the Greek prime minister’s office says.

Greece fears a potential repeat of the 2015 migrant crisis, when nearly a million people arrived in the country after fleeing conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Most of the migrants who travelled to Greece arrived via Turkey.

Over the past few days, the Greek government has said it doesn’t want to become the entry point into the EU for Afghans fleeing Taliban rule, and that its border forces are ready to prevent that.
