German civilian shot and wounded near airport

A German national has been shot while trying to get to Kabul airport. According to a German government spokeswoman, the civilian is to be flown out soon: “he is being given medical care and there is no risk to his life”.

The shooting is more evidence of the increasing chaos around the airport, with reports of hundreds of people close to the entrance, trying to get on flights out of Kabul.

German press agency DPA quotes a message from the German embassy to anyone trying to get on to a flight, warning of extreme confusion and possible armed incidents at the gates. “Access to the airport is for the moment possible, but in the meantime the gates can be blocked off at short notice – also because so many people are trying to get in with their families,” the message reads.

Another German military plane landed this morning at Hanover with 158 Afghans on board, local reports say. Hundreds of Germans are still reported to be in Afghanistan and the military is planning to send two helicopters to the capital to help airlift people to the airport. So far over 1,640 have been flown out on German planes, the army says.
